About the Piece

Martha was a quick little oil painting that gave me a chance to loosen up from the way I normally paint. Instead of focusing on every tiny detail and trying to make everything perfect, I wanted this piece to feel more free and flowy.

I let the brushstrokes speak for themselves and tried not to overwork anything. There’s something I really love about being able to see the movement of the paint and the marks that created the image. Martha is simple, a little imperfect, and much looser than my usual work, which is exactly what I wanted her to be.
